What can music studies do at the end of the world?

MSARN is a decentralized, multidisciplinary collaboration devoted to seeking insight into the challenges and opportunities the Anthropocene poses to music studies, in order to ask how music studies can contribute to efforts spanning across disciplines in the humanities, arts, social sciences, and physical and life sciences to reckon with the new planetary epoch, the so-called age of the Anthropos. We hope to incite new understandings of what the Anthropocene and the timescales of planetary geology mean for scholars of music and sound, now that it has become clear that the processes of biological and planetary history can no longer be regarded as insulated from the workings of social, cultural, economic, and global history.
